25 years of Conserving the Sierra
November 11, 2015
Many years ago people came in search of minerals to Sierra de las Minas (“the Mining Sierra”), as its Spanish name indicates. Today, people should come for another resource, even more important: the biodiversity and the scenic beauty of this mountain range in eastern Guatemala, protected in a Biosphere Reserve under FDN´s co-management. Abundant wildlife thrives here and the high altitudes are crowned by the largest cloud forest in Central America. Yet, the Sierra is a destination unknown to most tourists, expats, and even to many Guatemalans.
